Dizon defies odds, captures Asian karting jr crown
MANILA, Philippines - Christopher John Dizon leaned on sheer talent and determination as he overcame the odds to bag the Asian Karting Junior crown in the Asian Karting Open Championship series in Macau recently.
Competing with inferior equipment and limited resources against the state-of-the-art karts of his Asian rivals, Dizon banked on his superb driving skills to capture both the overall Formula 125 Open Juniors and the overall X30 Junior crowns in the prestigious CIK-FIA sanctioned event.
Dizon stayed in control bucking a pre-final mishap with Akmal Mohammad Ashibu of Indonesia to finish second to Akheela Chandra of Indonesia.
But he earned points enough to seal the coveted overall plum. He tallied 137 points to clinch the overall Formula 125 Open Juniors crown over Eduardo Coseteng Jr. (94 pts.) and Mikey Jordan (77 pts.); and snare the overall X30 Junior title with 127 points over Coseteng (76 pts.) and Jordan (67 pts.)
It was Dizon’s biggest win in two-and-a-half years of racing and cited the all-out support of Kart Plaza Mfg Corp. and its management and staff, coach Edgen Dy-liacco, Gabriel Tayao and family, mechanics Rommuel Salazar, Ricky Besona and Mario Suba, his family.
