Scott, Lakers great, soaks in PBA action
MANILA, Philippines - Former LA Lakers player and coach Byron Scott and Filipina girlfriend Cecilia Gutierrez are currently on Christmas holidays in the country and ready to enjoy Philippine brand of basketball.
The visiting couple were at the FilOil Flying V Centre to watch the Phoenix Petroleum-Meralco setto Wednesday and reportedly set to go to the Philippine Arena on Christmas Day to witness the showdown between Barangay Ginebra and Star.
Apparently, they watched the Phoenix-Meralco tiff upon the invitation of Meralco team manager Paolo Trillo, who has a cousin who is close to Scott’s girlfriend.
Gutierrez, according to Scott, had not been in the Philippines for 12 years. Based in Hermosa Beach, California, she’s a registered nurse.
Scott has LA Lakers Fil-Am sophomore guard Jordan Clarkson as another link to the Philippines. He handled Clarkson in the latter’s rookie season in the NBA.
In a brief interview by TV5 at the FilOil Flying V Centre, Scott said: “I saw some talents who I thought were very good. So if they keep on playing and make sure they stay hungry and give everything they’ve got, they have a chance to become very successful.”
Scott was part of the LA Lakers’ famed “Showtime” group in the 80s with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy.
