Why a fight between Mayweather, McGregor will never happen
MANILA, Philippines — UFC president Dana White said the "dream fight" between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather will never happen.
"He is not fighting Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather isn't going to fight him. It's never going to happen," White said in a Yahoo! Sports report.
The reigning UFC lightweight champion recently acquired a professional boxing license in California and is also trying to secure one in Nevada, stirring talks that a clash with Mayweather could be next.
White said that like the blockbuster match between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, negotiations for the match will take a long time.
"Look how long it took for that fight to be made," White said. "Those guys were in the same sport."
The UFC head honcho said he knows Mayweather is smart enough not to taint his undefeated record.
"Floyd [has] been perfect in fighting right guys at the right time. He isn't going to get in there and mix it up with Conor."
Mayweather Productions CEO Leonard Ellerbe earlier shot down the possibility of the fight and said both fighters are not really interested in the fight.
"Floyd and I have nothing against UFC or any of their fighters. I respect all fighters who step in a ring or the Octagon, but Floyd is in the Bahamas enjoying life," Ellerbe earlier told ESPN.com.
