Upbeat on next season, Baldwin to continue working on Eagles growth

MANILA, Philippines – If there's a moment where Tab Baldwin's experience shone the brightest, it was after the loss to the Green Archers.

The coach, who joined the team as a consultant in the offseason, is now setting his sights on Season 80.

"The test is not to live up to this year, but the test is to live up to our potential," Baldwin said. "[I]f we don't come in next year thinking what our weaknesses are and what we have to improve, then we'll probably go backwards."

And of course, a grizzled tactician knows to give credit when it's due.

"Congratulations to La Salle. They were the best team all year long. There's nothing I could say that's a surprise. They earned this championship," Baldwin said.

"I think a lot of people may have been saying that they were much better than they were performing," he offered. "That's exceptionally unfair. They had to fight hard to win this championship and they showed a lot of character in doing that, and they deserve all the credit for that."

Written off from Final Four contention, Ateneo ignited slowly, as the cliche goes, like diesel. After a sluggish first round in the UAAP, the Eagles went berserk. They snagged six of their seven second round games and even survived the defending champions Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the semifinals.

And just getting over that slump was already a feat worth noting, if you ask Baldwin. He said it's all about one’s growth as a player.

"Our job is to grow great players. The by-product of doing that is winning championships. We obviously haven't developed our players enough yet and that will be our goal, always," Baldwin added.

"We obviously haven't developed our players enough yet and that will be our goal always. All the other things like having the fighting spirit of an Atenean, making the shots, developing the strengths and the physical attributes, and the athleticism, that's all a by-product of developing the players as they should be and the players dedicating themselves to try to reach their potential," he offered.

" I think that if we pursue the right goals as coaches and we dedicate ourselves to the players and to their future as young men, all of the other things will fall in line, and that's what we did and what we'll continue to do," he closed.
