Magdaleno turns down rematch versus Donaire

Dino Maragay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - WBO super bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno is not keen on giving Nonito Donaire Jr. an immediate rematch.

In an interview with boxingscene.com’s Ryan Burton, Magdaleno said Donaire must first prove that he deserves it.

“I would like Donaire to get some more fights in and make his way back up,” said the 25-year-old Magdaleno, who came away with a unanimous decision win over Donaire in Las Vegas last Nov. 6 to become the new champion.

Donaire has since slammed the result, believing he clearly won the action-filled bout. The Filipino-American has called Magdaleno out several times for a rematch.

But Magdaleno won’t budge, saying Donaire must earn it first.

“He (Donaire)’s been all over Twitter and Instagram saying he gave me an opportunity but he didn’t give me no opportunity. I worked hard for it. I was the mandatory fighter for that belt since the beginning of the year and he didn’t want to give me the fight,” said Magdaleno.

“He actually ducked me twice,” he added.

For now, Magdaleno said he prefers to test other opponents before taking on Donaire for a second time.

“Maybe later on down the road that fight can happen but for now I want to see what else is out there for me. I want to see whatever other big names at 122 are there for me,” he said.
