MANILA, Philippines – Former WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas was recently asked who he thinks is the best boxer on the planet right now.
He said it’s the man who dominated him to take his title.
In an interview with host Jenna J of On The Ropes Boxing, Vargas believes Pacquiao is currently the world’s top boxer, now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. – who last defeated the Filipino icon – has stayed retired.
“I don’t know, I mean he’s a great talent, he’s the best in the division at the moment, best fighter at the moment now that Floyd retired,” the 27-year-old boxer said.
Vargas himself found out how good Pacquiao is when they locked horns in Las Vegas last month, wherein he ended up losing in a lopsided fight.
He reiterated how fighting Pacquiao is like playing a game of chess.
“I expected him to come in much more. He’s a very good fighter so I expected him to be much more aggressive and to stay on the attack. He thought twice about it and it was literally a chess match. We were both getting in there and taking advantage of each other’s mistakes,” Vargas continued.
“Whenever I saw the opportunity, I’d catch him with a few shots and he would come back with some shots as well, so It was an action packed fight back to back,” added the Las Vegas-based boxer, whom Pacquiao also knocked down in their fight.
There are speculations that Pacquiao could be headed for a rematch with Mayweather, who showed up ringside at the Thomas & Mack Center to see his rival beat Vargas.
Vargas, for his part, is interested in another meeting between the two superstars.
“We just don’t know. He [Pacquiao] said in the first fight he messed up his shoulder. I guess it would be interesting to find out how the rematch would go,” said Vargas.
