Lechon world record can wait — Gullas

Iris Mariani B. Algabre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Achieving a world record for the longest line of lechon or roasted pig, a prized delicacy of Talisay City, is not Mayor Eduardo Gullas’ priority at the moment.

Gullas told reporters yesterday he will instead focus on the completion of the new Tabunok market, establishment of a technical-vocational school in Lagtang, and improvement of the city’s traffic situation.

The mayor issued the statement after Councilor Doroteo Emit, the chairman of the Tourism, Local and International Affairs of the city, bared plans to achieve a world record for the longest line of lechon and puso in January when the city celebrates its Charter Day anniversary.

Emit recently passed a resolution requesting Gullas to appropriate P1.5 million to cover the expenses related to the preparation, excluding the cost of the registration which is $1000 (or around P49,000).

Yesterday, however, the City Council agreed to lay the measure on the table while further study will be conducted.

Vice Mayor Alan Bucao earlier said they need to consult technical experts regarding the activity and conduct further study.

Gullas welcomed the council’s decision.

“I agree with the council to gather all the necessary data first before implementing it. I’d like Talisay to establish a name in all fields, pero mas maayo kung mo-establish ta og name kanang dili pa maka-affect sa uban nga wala pa nabuhat,” he said.

Gullas said once his priority projects will be completed, then that will be the best time to stage the “Laray sa Inasal” for a world record.

For his part, Emit said that he respects the decision of the council, including that of the mayor.

In defending the proposal, he said he only wanted to regain Talisay’s popularity in terms of its “best lechon.”

“Ang katuyoan ug rationale sa atoang Inasal Festival kay ang pag-regain sa atoang record nga ang inasal sa Talisay mao’y lamian,” Emit said. (FREEMAN)
