PAL enforces Samsung smartphone ban
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Airlines (PAL) is now enforcing a total ban on Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.
In a statement issued yesterday, PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said the airline will bar travelers from boarding their flights until they remove the smartphone from their person, hand-carried bags and checked-in luggage.
The airline is enforcing the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines’ Memorandum Circular 34-16, which bans the devices on airport premises, on board aircraft and as cargo shipment.
Samsung has recalled the Galaxy Note 7 due to numerous reports of the device catching fire, even when turned off.
Authorities advised that owners of these smartphones contact Samsung or their wireless carrier to either arrange for a refund or a replacement device.
Earlier, the United States Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration jointly issued an emergency order banning all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices from air transportation in the US.
