Cavaliers, Responders remain in UNTV helm

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police trampled their respective rivals to keep their share of the Group A lead in the fifth UNTV Cup at the Pasig City Sports Center over the weekend.

With former Letran star Boyet Bautista leading the way, the AFP Cavaliers trounced the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Black Wolves, 90-80, for their second straight in the tournament organized by UNTV president and CEO Daniel Razon.

Also shining for the Cavaliers in the tournament offering P4 million to the champion were Jeffrey Quiambao  15) and former PBL star Eugene Tan (7).

The PNP Responders, on the other hand, drew 28 points from Ollan Omiping and 21 markers from ABL veteran Harold Sta. Cruz as they fashioned out an 82-75 victory over the National Housing Authority Builders.

In the lone Group B match, former champion Judiciary bounced back from a stinging 75-67 defeat to newcomer Bureau of Customs with an 84-68 rout of Department of Justice.

Chester Tolomia, another veteran of the now defunct PBL, hit 23 points while Don Camaso and Warren Ybanez added 19 and 15 markers, respectively as the Judiciary Magi improved to 2-1.

Judiciary’s win also put to naught  the 30-point performance of Jorel Canizares.
