Spurs ready for life without Duncan

Philstar.com
MANILA, Philippines – The San Antonio Spurs are ready to begin life after the departure of long time player Tim Duncan.

Duncan, who was the Spurs' top draft pick in 1997, retired from the NBA after playing for 19 years.

During their media day on Tuesday, point guard Patty Mills said the newcomers are adjusting well with the team's system.

"This is not a sprint. This is not to rush into anything. It's to understand the whole process, what the coaches expect of you and vice versa. It's a learning process," Mills said.

Dejounte Murray, a rookie shooting guard from Washington, will debut this season as the Spurs' first round pick in the 2016 Draft.

David Lee from the Dallas Mavericks and forward Davis Bertans will also see action for the five-time NBA champions.

But among the new faces, perhaps the best person to fill in the shoes left by Duncan is 2002 Rookie of the Year Pau Gasol.

"He's a very smart player. He's the type of player that can adapt to the system." Mills said of Gasol. "Obviously, his passing game will be really effective for us in multiple aspects."

Before signing with the Spurs, Gasol spent two years with the Chicago Bulls. The previous season, he averaged 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 72 games.
