Fajardo on cusp of making history as first back-to-back-to-back PBA MVP
MANILA, Philippines – There seems to be no stopping June Mar Fajardo now from making history as the first “back-to-back-to-back” winner of the coveted PBA MVP award.
Fajardo remained well entrenched on top in the stats race through the PBA Governors Cup quarterfinals with a cumulative statistical point average of 39.5 points as against the 34.7 of the second-running Jason Castro.
Castro could win the Governors Cup Best Player of the Conference award but might not be able to shake up Fajardo in their fight for the season MVP award.
Running third to fifth are Terrence Romeo (33.5), Calvin Abueva (32.1) and Stanley Pringle (31.2). But they’re practically out of the MVP race with their teams gone in the season-ending tourney.
So far, Fajardo and Abueva are the official MVP contenders already, being winners of the BPC plums in the Philippine Cup and in the Commissioner’s Cup, respectively.
Arwind Santos, Sean Anthony, Japeth Aguilar, Alex Cabagnot and Asi Taulava are the next five in the stats race, making them stronger contenders for the Mythical First and Second Teams.
But the MVP award looks in the bag for Fajardo.
No player in PBA history has won the coveted top individual award for three successive years. Others who have won it two in a row are Bogs Adornardo, Alvin Patrimonio and Danny Ildefonso.
