Singaporean edges Anton in Asian karting

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Castrol-Yokohama champion Inigo Anton engaged Singaporean ace Aidan Quek in a neck-and-neck battle all the way to the finish line before settling for runner-up in a photo finish in the Formula Cadet recently of the 2016 Asian Karting Open Championship Phl leg at the Carmona race track.

Towards the end of the 16-lap final race, the duel kept spectators on their toes as they diced for the lead several times, racing side by side at the main straight as they blazed to the finish line.

The official timing device showed Quek squeaking past Anton by just .010 of a second to capture the championship trophy.

Anton, on board his Kart Plaza-Kilton prepared racing kart, started third on the grid in the final heat of the Formula Cadet division but tucked in behind pole sitter Quek as soon as the green flag was up.

He kept the pressure on Quek for 13 laps only to relinquish it back to the Singaporean on the 14th. Anton then made a bold move on the final lap and drag raced Quek to the crowds’ delight as they dashed towards the chequered flag.

“It was a dead heat! Nobody knew who won, not even Inigo or Aidan. We had to wait a few minutes to get the computer printout based on the electronic transponders times. Inigo lost by .010 of a second which is about 20 times faster than a blink of an eye,” said Anton’s father Carlos after the race.
