UP, San Sebastian shoot for semis berth in V-League

MANILA, Philippines – State U and San Sebastian seek a semifinal berth as the two collide Wednesday even as Ateneo likewise to tries to advance as it clashes with early semis entrant Far Eastern U in the final quarters playdate of the Shakey's V-League Season 13-Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Lady Maroons fell to National U Lady Bulldogs, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26, 19-25, Monday and into a three-way tie for the third spot with the San Sebastian Lady Stags and the Ateneo Lady Eagles with identical 2-2 (win-loss) records.

The winner of the UP-San Sebastian duel, which is set at 4 p.m., will join NU (4-1) and FEU (3-1) in the best-of-three semis in this tournament using Mikasa as its official ball and ACCEL as official outfitter.

Ateneo, for its part, stayed in the hunt after besting Santo Tomas, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19, also Monday and could surge ahead outright if it could pull the rug from under an FEU squad that has been playing solid as of late in their 6 p.m. showdown.

A loss though arranges the Lady Eagles a playoff for the fourth and last semis seat against the loser of the UP-San Sebastian match.

Ateneo team captain Michelle Morente said they will do their best to get the victory.

"We will definitely go for it," said Morente, who has taken over former captain Alyssa Valdez's place after the latter played his fifth and last UAAP season early this year.

In the Spikers' Turf Season Two-Collegiate Conference, FEU and La Salle, which is tied at No. 2 with a 3-1 marks in Group A, tackle each other for a semis spot and join Ateneo (5-0) and NU (4-1) there.

UST (3-1) faces off with an already ousted Emilio Aguinaldo likewise for a semis berth.

A defeat by the Tigers will send it in a knockout playoff with the Maroons (3-2) for the fourth and last semis slot.
