Ailing Soltones fashions out 'flu game' to remember
MANILA, Philippines – Despite flu, two-time NCAA MVP Gretchel Soltones led the Lady Stags of San Sebastian to a four-set victory over University of Santo Tomas in the Shakey's V-League Season 13-Collegiate Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City on Wednesday.
"Okay naman na po, may kaunti lang po sa lalamunan and sinat lang," Soltones told the press after their 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19 victory over the Tigresses.
"Medyo kapos po (yung performance) kanina. Pero hindi po ako nilabas ni coach kasi yung depensa sa likod kailangan," she added.
Soltones still top-scored for San Sebastian, tallying 23 points built on 21 attacks, a block and an ace.
But more than her usual MVP numbers, Soltones said she is happy her teammates are finally realizing their worth.
"Nakakatuwa kasi mas nagiging mature yung iba samin unlike before, kasi parati na lang sa akin yung bola last time."
Against UST, middle blockers Joyce Sta. Rita and Katherine Villegas combined for 18 points. Libero Alyssa Eroa registered 30 excellent digs, half of the teams 60.
Soltones said this will greatly help them in their upcoming NCAA campaign. Last season, they surrendered a thrice-to-beat advantage and the championship to College of St. Benilde after sweeping the elimination round.
"Dito kasi kami makakakuha ng experience as a team. And mas maigi 'to kasi yung iba samin nabigyan ng chance maglaro," she said.
