Generika, Cignal cruise to easy wins

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Generika took its sweet time before unleashing its fatal blows to clobber a still winless Amy’s, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19, 25-14, in the second round of the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the San Juan Arena.

Despite playing without head coach Francis Vicente and chief assistant Rosemarie Prochina, the Lifesavers still peppered the Spikers’ defense with hot smashes in the third set before going full blast in the decider to register the easy win in this club tourney bankrolled by KLab Cyscorpions, Asics, Mikasa and Mueller with TV5 as official broadcast partner.

It was Generika’s second win in the second round and another victory over Standard Insurance-Navy today will give them the top seeding in the sudden-death classification for fifth to eighth places set on Aug. 7.

It was the Spikers’ third setback in the second round.

Meanwhile, Cignal finally flaunted its strength anew as it registered an easy 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 win over Standard Insurance-Navy in the second game.

Middle blocker Jeanette Panaga did most of the damage for the HD Spikers, who finally discovered their deadly form after finishing way below expectation in the first round.

Panaga, one of the prized defenders of reigning NCAA champion College of Saint Benilde, delivered 12 kills and three blocks to finish with 16 points while Janine Navarro and Michelle Laborte submitted 11 and 10 points, respectively, to give Cignal its second win after three outings in the second round.
