Tapales cops WBO crown

The Philippine Star

AYUTTHAYA, Thailand – Marlon Tapales scored a pulsating 11th round knockout victory over Thailand’s Pungluang Sor Singyu Wednesday afternoon to snatch the World Boxing Organization bantamweight title at the Ayutthaya City Park.

Down twice in the fifth round after taking wicked body blows, Tapales returned fire in the next round by sending Sor Singyu down with a right hook.

But the coup de grace came five rounds later when a mini-barrage sent Sor Singyu down for the count as the crowd, which was raucous earlier, went silent.

A left to the head decked Sor Singyu down but two body shots also contributed to the pain and punishment.

“I really thought that the referee was going to stop the fight when I got knocked down twice,” said Tapales, 24, a first-timer in a world title fight.
