Foton to assemble best for AWC tiff
MANILA, Philippines – Foton Pilipinas gears up for a tough outing but remains upbeat of its chances when it vies in the Asian Volleyball Confederation’s Asian Women’s Club Championship Sept. 3-11 at the Alonte Sports Center in Biñan, Laguna.
Foton, headed by Jaja Santiago, Angeli Araneta, Patty Orendain, Ivy Perez, Bia General, Rhea Dimaculangan, Maika Ortiz and rookies Cherry Rondina, EJ Laure and Carol Cerveza, topped the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix last year to clinch the lone berth in the top-level competition.
The Tornadoes will be beefed up by two imports in Lindsay Stalzer and Ariel Usher and four local reinforcements, including F2 Logistics’ Aby Maraño, RC Cola-Army’s Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rachel Ann Daquis and Petron’s talented libero Jen Reyes.
“This marks the first time that Foton has been tasked to represent the country in this prestigious international volleyball competition,” said Foton team manager Alvin Lu in yesterday’s media launch at the Crimson Hotel graced by Superliga officials Philip Ella Juico and Ramon Suzara.
