Power Smashers gain last semis berth
MANILA, Philippines - Laoag outlasted a stubborn University of the Philippines side, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24, yesterday to clinch the fourth and last semifinal berth in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13-Open Conference at Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Dragged into a tight, fierce duel, the Power Smashers relied on attacks and their superb blocking at endgame in the last two frames to finally finish off their rivals and join Pocari Sweat, Air Force and BaliPure in the crossover semis of the V-League season-opening conference sponsored by Shakey’s.
Air Force fought back from a set down and turned back Pocari Sweat, 20-25, 25-17 25-22, 25-15, in the other game to clinch the top seeding and a semis duel with Laoag.
The Jet Spikers and the Lady Warriors actually finished tied for first at 6-1 at the end of the single round elims but the former took the No. 1 ranking in the next round with a superior tiebreak score.
