Sofitel Manila run up

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila is linking up with RunRio for the fourth straight year as it stages the 2016 Sofitel Manila Half Marathon on Aug. 21 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines grounds in Pasay City.

Now taking off from the CCP Open Field fronting Sofitel, the event braces for a bigger cast of participants with the organizers looking for a 5,000-runner roster as it generates more funds for their beneficiary group Virlanie Foundation.

“Over 4,300 joined last year’s successful run and we hope to continue to encourage more wellness and fitness enthusiasts to participate this year,” said Sofitel resident manager Alfredo Denage in yesterday’s press conference at the Sofitel’s Davao Room.

“We were able to raise P750,000 for Virlanie Foundation last year and we hope to generate funds this year,” said Sofitel’s Alice Jenkins.

Race director Rio dela Cruz said the race will have three categories – 5K, 10K and 21K – and will take runners through the Manila Bay area where designated hydration areas will be stationed.

“The race will not only show the scenic view of the surrounding area, it will also promote environmental protection because we will encourage our runners to bring their own water bottles,” said Dela Cruz.

Online registration had actually started with the launching of its new race website, www.sofitelmanilahalfmarathon.com or at Dela Cruz’s own address, [email protected], yesterday. Listup ends on Aug. 7.

Registration is also open at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, Runnr Store at Bonifacio High Street in Taguig and Trinoma branches, Timex Megamall and Toby’s at Mall of Asia in Pasay City from July 13 to Aug. 14.

The event is co-presented by Cebu Pacific GetGo Card by Union Bank and sponsored by Gatorade, Timex, GoPro, Althaus Phl, illy Coffee, Nescafe Ready-to-Drink Coffee, Siyana Sweet, Hygienix, Harvey Fresh, Great Image, Gardenia, Star Xpo Enterprises and Delsan Office Systems and media partners The Philippine STAR, Business World, ANC The ABS-CBN News Channel, 2nd Avenue, CT, Jack TV and Fox International Channels.
