Arellano topples UP; SSC zaps depleted Perpetual

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Arellano continued to buck the absence of national player Jiovani Jalalon as it blasted University of the Philippines, 75-61, to clinch a berth in the quarterfinal round of the FilOil Flying V Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.

Donald Gumaru and Kent Salado combined for 23 points for the Chiefs, who actually blew a big lead in the third period but recovered in the fourth quarter to win pulling away.

It was Arellano’s fifth victory in six games as it secured a seat in the next round of the country’s pre-season tournament.

The Maroons, led by Dave Moralde’s 12 points and Paul Desiderio’s 11 markers, fell to 2-2.

Earlier, San Sebastian pounced on the absence of Nigerians Bright Akhuetie and Prince Eze as it hacked out an 80-70 victory over Perpetual Help yesterday to stay in the quarterfinal race.

Jerick Fabian fired 20 points while Alvin Capobres matched that big output in just 19 minutes of action as they powered the Stags to their third win against as many losses to remain in the thick of things.

“This was a good win for us as we all know that Perpetual Help is a very good team even without their imports,” said SSC coach Edgar Macaraya. “I know they did not play their usual game but I am proud of our defensive effort especially in the rebounds category since we aren’t very tall.”

The Altas sorely missed the absence of Akhuetie and Eze with the former honoring a previous commitment in the other league while the latter was indisposed.

Gab Dagangon tried to carry the fight for the Las Piñas-based squad and shot 16 points while Jeffrey Coronel and Flash Sadiwa backed him up with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“I must admit we were a bit lucky. But we’ll take the win anytime,” said Macaraya.

Meanwhile, NBA Fil-Am star Jordan Clarkson will grace the Ateneo-La Salle match tomorrow. Clarkson is in town on vacation and to watch Gilas Pilipinas prepare for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The Eagles primed up for their keenly awaited match with the Archers by trouncing the Lyceum Pirates, 65-58, in the other game.
