Tiu claims 3rd straight Quick 8 win
MANILA, Philippines - Multi-titled Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing dominated his pet Quick 8 event and beat Danes Sarmiento to rule the third leg of the 2016 Philippine Drag Racing Championship Northern Series at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga recently.
Tiu took the best dished out by Sarmiento then leaned on his experience to nail his third straight triumph in Quick 8 section of the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by M&H, Sparco and Aguila Auto Glass.
After setting a new track mark of 8.578 seconds, Tiu, in his Nissan R35, flash top form and nearly shattered his Philippine drag racing all-time fastest record of 8.806 seconds with an 8.945-second clocking. Sarmiento timed 9.977 seconds.
It was also Tiu’s fifth consecutive victory in the year, moving him three wins away from completing a season sweep.
Vanni Garcia of Vannitec finished third in 10.931 seconds.
Sarmiento actually shared the spotlight as he hit a consistent time of 9.962 seconds to beat Sheldon Chua and John Kalaw and top the M&H Super Pro event.
But it was little-known Romualdo Vasquez who pulled off the day’s biggest surprise when he copped the premier M&H Pro title over more-experienced rivals Ryan Quimpo and third placer Vanni Garcia.
Meanwhile, drag racing returns to Pampanga tomorrow.
