MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters rode on its guards' marksmanship to snare their first championship in four years at the expense of Alaska Aces, 109-92.
The Painters' Jericho Cruz and Paul Lee were just too much for Aces. They combined for 41 markers to finally dispatch the Aces in the Finals Game 6, Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Lee caught fire early in the game, sinking four of the E-Painters' seven triples in the first period. From that point on, Rain or Shine never looked back.
"I don't know what to say right now, man, I'm so speechless," Cruz said. He had 21 in the game.
"Nakakasawa narin maging runner-up," Lee added. The skipper and Gilas standout tallied 20 points.
Best Player of the Conference and Aces guard Calvin Abueva was his usual raging-bull self, but was hounded with four early fouls.
While his scoring was as sharp as his will, Abueva's 26-point performance was not enough to tow Alaska out of a big hole that swelled to 23 points.
This is the fourth bridesmaid finish for Alaska.
The championship is Rain or Shine's second title since their league debut in 2006. Their first hardware came in 2012 during the Governors' Cup.
