Azkals reach highest world rating at 115th

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine football achieved another milestone even without playing an international match as it reached its all-time high of 115th in the latest world rankings released by the International Football Federation.

From a previous 116th, the Pinoy booters climbed one spot in the May 2016 rankings.

Phl now sits 16th overall in Asia, where Iran enjoys the top view with its 42nd ranking in the world.

The Azkals also maintained their top standing among countries in Southeast Asia, outranking traditional powerhouses like Thailand (119), Vietnam (145), and Singapore (148).

The Filipinos have wrapped up their campaign in the Fifa World Cup Qualifiers, bowing out after the second round. They have since shifted focus to the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup group stages, where they seek to make the most of the homefield advantage to reach the finals for the first time.
