Floyd ready for comeback?

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Suddenly, there’s sense to talk about a rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

From the American capital of Washington, D.C. the other day, Mayweather hinted of yet another return to boxing, eight months since he said he’s done boxing and a year after beating Pacquiao.

Mayeather, 39, enjoying life in retirement, spoke to Showtime’s Jim Gray during a boxing card he promoted over the weekend, and spoke of a possible return to the ring.

The undefeated (49-0) American boxer, touring the world on board his private jet stacked with cash, said there are talks between him and Showtime and CBS.

He said it involves “nine figures.”

Gray asked Mayweather, who retired in 2007 and unretired in 2009, if a possible return was tied to the money or the chance to improve his ring record to an unprecedented 50-0, he said, “Both.”

A few names were mentioned as possible opponent if and when he makes another comeback. There’s middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter.

At the back of everybody’s mind, of course, is Pacquiao.

Mayweather, who was in Dubai, Cairo, Morocco and Maldives just the past few days, left the multi-million-dollar big question hanging.

“Yes, I’m happy to be where I’m at,” said Mayweather, who loves to flaunt his wealth, recently being photographed standing in between a pair of exotic Bugattis worth over $3 million each.

Mayweather, who made over $200 million for beating Pacquiao on May 3 last year, said he still makes seven digits a month these days – without lifting a finger.

So, why would he even consider fighting again?

“Everyone is asking, asking me, ‘Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’ Right now, I’m happy on this side (of the ropes), but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know.

“But for now, I’m happy on this side. As of right now, you know, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way, upwards of, of course, nine figures,” said Mayweather, the richest athlete ever.

He calls himself “The Best Ever.”

“I’m truly blessed, way beyond belief. I don’t know what we’re going to do, but right now, I’m happy being on this side helping fighters,” Mayweather, the promoter, said.

The boxer who moves around with diamond-laced gold nuggets hanging from his neck said many times he’d never face Pacquiao again following last year’s victory.

But he created quite a stir when he came to watch Pacquiao’s fight against Timothy Bradley last April 9 at the MGM Grand.

All he said was that it should have been a draw.

Pacquiao has followed Mayweather into retirement, and is now focusing on his political career. If the surveys don’t lie, the 37-year-old Filipino icon is bound to become a senator.

The elections will take place on May 9, with the eight-division champion standing in third among dozens of candidates for the 12 vacant slots in the Senate.

Pacquiao said he won’t hesitate to face Mayweather in a rematch.

Let the talks begin.
