So humbles Kasparov, finishes 2nd
MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster Wesley So posted a second place finish for the second straight time in the Ultimate Blitz Chess ruled by GM Hikaru Nakamura in St. Louis Saturday night.
So pooled 10 points, a full point behind Nakamura, who took the crown with an 11-point total worth $20,000.
So highlighted his stint with a 4-2 score, including three impressive wins over Garry Kasparov, the former world champion, who came out of retirement to participate in this four-man blitz classic.
So bowed to Nakamura, 2-4, but Nakamura lost in his duel to Kasparov, 3.5-2.5.
GM Fabiano Caruana, the only other participant in the by-invitation-only event and winner of the US Chess Championship, wound up fourth and last with 5.5 points.
Meanwhile, So will play Chinese GM Ding Liren in a duel set May 1-9 in China.
