UFC champ McGregor ‘unretires’

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - UFC featherweight champion Connor McGregor’s retirement lasted just two days.

Just 36 hours after he tweeted he had retired from the sport, McGregor announced he has “unretired” and is open to face off Nate Diaz at UFC 200 on July 10  in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I am not retired,” said McGregor in a statement he released on Facebook recently.

UFC president Dana White, however, has yet to announce if McGregor will fight at UFC 200 after the former pulled him out of the historic card on July 9.

According to UFC.com, White said the decision was made after McGregor informed the UFC that he would not participate in any promotional activities, including a commercial shoot and press conferences.

Without McGregor, UFC 200 will be highlighted by two title fights – one between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight crown and the other between Miesha Tate defending her UFC women’s bantamweight title versus Amanda Nunes.

McGregor knocked out Aldo in UFC 194 last year but lost to Nate Diaz in a non-title bout in UFC 196 last March.

Two days ago, McGregor announced on his Twitter account, @TheNotoriousMMA, “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheers. Catch ya’s later.”

Now he’s back.

Jon “Bones” Jones (21-1) clashes with Ovince Saint Preux (19-7) for the interim light heavyweight title at UFC 197 on Sunday, also in Las Vegas.
