MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao on Thursday said he respects the decision of sports apparel giant Nike to sever ties with him as a sponsor.

In a report by ABS-CBN News’ Jay Dayupay, Pacquiao said his camp is now looking for a new sponsor to provide him with apparel and other sports gear.

At the same time, Pacquiao maintained that under their previous agreement, Nike produces clothes that bear his name and logo only each time he has a fight. This includes the trunks and shoes he wears in the ring.

"Kung ano man 'yong decision nila, desisyon nila 'yon, nirerespeto ko at saka ang pag-sponsor nila sa akin, 'yong mga damit lang naman para sa fight (Whatever Nike’s decision is, I respect it. Their sponsorship deal with me involves providing clothes for fights),” said the Filipino icon.

Nike announced it has dropped Pacquiao in its roster of elite athlete endorsers following the boxer’s controversial remarks on same-sex couples.

Pacquiao is currently training in General Santos City with Freddie Roach in preparation for his fight with Timothy Bradley this April. – Dino Maragay
