Mayweather named best boxer of 2015

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – Floyd Mayweather Jr., who retired undefeated last year, has been named Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.

The balloting results were announced late last week, according to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.

Mayweather copped the award with victories over Manny Pacquiao – a fight that ended up as the richest in boxing history – and Andre Berto.

This marks the third time the American has won the plum, having also bagged it in 2007 and 2013.

Curiously, Pacquiao was BWAA Fighter of the Year in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Mayweather thus joins Pacquiao and other three-time Fighter of the Year winners Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield in the elite group.

He left the sport with a record of 49-0, with 26 knockouts. – Dino Maragay
