PBA to open player affairs office

MANILA, Philippines – PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa on Wednesday bared plans for a Players’ Affairs Office where retired and active players as well as coaches and staff can seek help or advice in terms of contracts, disputes and other matters.

“Any concerns, they can come to us,” said Narvasa, who pointed out the recent contract problems of cagers Alex Nuyles and Mike Burtscher as cases that hurt the league’s image.

"Any of their concerns they can come to us. If there will be no action hindi naman pwede yan. There has to be immediate action. It cannot drag on," he added.

The newly minted commissioner added that the office, which will be overseen by his executive assistant Pita Dobles, will also cover coaches and staff.

“The Players’ Affairs Office will open its doors to anybody that is involved in the PBA. It can even go down to the ballboy. Any concern. If he is feeling aggrieved then we will see how we can resolve them. This also trickles back even the former players; those who have retired. Even if they are retired if we can do something about it then why not?" Narvasa continued

Aside from the usual financial literacy program for its rookies, the commissioner’s office is also looking into seminars for PBA wives, media management and educational programs for its coaches and players.

“You hear stories of how players are in dire financial straits when their careers are over,” explained Narvasa, who aside from basketball has extensive experience in finance and banking.

“We want to teach them the value of money, its proper investment, and how they can make it work for them. We will look for the proper industry professionals to handle these seminars. You have to make sure they have the credibility and the accomplishments so they can effectively communicate their ideas and advice. The first of these programs will be rolled out by January next year.”
