Azkals face toughest test vs Uzbeks

MANILA, Philippines - Azkals team manager Dan Palami reminded his wards that they are about to face their sternest test in Tuesday’s Fifa World Cup qualifying Group H match against Uzbekistan.

“I think that will be the toughest challenge that we’ll have,” said Palami of the White Wolves, who are ranked 49 places higher than Phl at 76th.

Palami likened the Uzbeks to the Azkals’ opponent in the qualifiers for the previous World Cup – powerhouse Kuwait. The Kuwaitis beat the Azkals on aggregate, 5-1, to advance to the third round in that 2011 showdown.

“It’s like the old Azkals facing Kuwait but even then this is a stronger team (now). I’m quite confident that somehow, it will not be easy for them (Uzbekistan),” said the Azkals boss.

Phl XI won its first two games in the WCQ, 2-1 over Bahrain and 2-0 over Yemen for six points and second place in the group behind unbeaten North Korea (nine points). Uzbekistan rebounded from a 2-4 loss to North Korea with a 1-0 victory over Yemen last Thursday to occupy third with three points.

In the leadup to the tough match, the Azkals played an international friendly against Maldives last Thursday and won, 2-0.

Coach Thomas Dooley also used the opportunity to give the players, especially those who don’t normally see action, a chance to play more minutes and gain confidence and positive energy heading into the game against the White Wolves.

“We got the win and everybody was able to get playing time. Now we’re not too tired for Uzbekistan and we’ll be ready for the game,” said skipper Phil Younghusband, who was subbed at the start of the second half.

The switch in personnel and position was apparently designed to hide the team’s true intention for the Uzbeks.

“They (Uzbekistan) had a scout here, their technical director was watching the game and we hope we’re able to send him the wrong signal,” said Palami.
