Spurs' Danny Green ready to take on support role

MANILA, Philippines — With a couple of tested names joining the San Antonio Spurs, one of the many questions hounding shooting guard Danny Green is his playing time.

 

But that’s the least of his concerns going into the 2015-16 NBA season.

 

“I’m low maintenance,” Green said in an interview during the NBA 3X Philippines at the Mall of Asia Music Hall on Saturday. He was most notable for setting an NBA Finals series record of 27 three-pointers in the Spurs’ 2013 championship series with the Miami Heat.

 

Even with the arrival of playoff-tested pieces in David West and LaMarcus Aldridge, and an NBA championship under his belt, Green remains hungry.

 

And early into the regular season, the 28-year-old guard said he’s already putting on work and hinted that he has no qualms about the arrival of new talents into the Spurs’ fold.

 

“I’m working on everything. I’m continuing to perfect my role in the system and make sure that our team is a contender,” he said.  

 

Green was re-signed by the Spurs early in July with a contract reportedly worth $45 million for a span of four years. He averaged 11.7 points last season and started 80 of his 81 games.

 

“Every year we want to win. But there’s no guarantee,” he said. “We don’t expect to win. We want to win.”

 

“They’re winners,” he said of the two high-profile acquisitions of San Antonio. “I don’t think they’d come if they can’t handle it  or adjust to it (Spurs system). 

 

“I expect [Aldridge] to do what he does. He’s an All-Star. I expect him to be a force down low and to protect the rim.”

 

The Spurs, who are considered by many to have perfected team play in the NBA even before the newly minted Golden State Warriors, are also penciled as the biggest winners in the offseason. Aside from signing the two aforementioned big men, they’ve also acquired Summer League Most Valuable Player Kyle Anderson, who led the crew to the championship.

 

Faced with questions relating to the team’s chemistry, Green had one simple answer: “Pop (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) will do a good job with that. He’ll help us keep our bodies fresh.”
