Parks Jr.'s dilemma: Stay or go home?

Alder Almo - Philstar.com

Bobby Ray Parks Jr.'s chances of making it to the NBA this season were reduced from slim to none after Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban's statements on Thursday.

"It's hard to say at this point," Cuban told NBA.com Philippines.

It was short of saying he won't get in. The Mavericks have already filled up their back court with the recent signing of free agent shooter John Jenkins along with the transfer of Deron Williams from Brooklyn to his hometown of Dallas. They also re-signed JJ Barea and kept Raymond Felton and Devin Harris.

Mavs.com also reported that the best bets from their Summer League roster likely to get an invite to the training camp are veterans Jordan Crawford, Maalik Wayns and big man Jeremy Tyler. There was no mention of Parks Jr. despite his efficient performance in their last three games.

The reality is Parks Jr. may still be a year or two away from NBA level. Mavsmoneyball.com pointed out in one of their recaps that the only thing that keeps Parks Jr. going is his motor. He doesn't have any unique skill at this point to make it to the next level.

At 22, Parks Jr. has plenty of time to spare. But he needs financial back-up to pursue his dreams if there are no NBA teams willing to give him a shot this season.

The most logical choice for him is to go after the NBA D-League, which will have its draft on Nov. 1. And the other choice is the PBA where several teams are waiting for him to come home and make an immediate impact.

The NBA will start training camp on Sept. 29, still more than a month away from now.  Parks Jr. still has a chance to get a call-up from any of the 30 NBA teams that would want to gamble on his upside and marketing appeal.

As the agonizing wait continues for the country's first homegrown talent to ever get this close to the NBA, his options are getting thinner by the day.

PBA champion coaches Leo Austria and Tim Cone gave their two cents worth that it would be best for Parks Jr. to stay in the US and play in the NBA D-League if there are no takers from the NBA.

But Cone warned him that the money is small and life in the NBA D-League is tough based on the accounts of PBA imports who played there.

Will Parks Jr. gamble and stay in the US or will he bite the irresistible offer of a multi-million peso deal as a lottery pick in the PBA? What do you think? Vote below and explain your choice in the comments sections!
