Lassiter in wait-and-see mode for possible Gilas stint

Alder Almo - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines -- Marcio Lassiter remains non-committal for a possible Gilas call-up saying he does not want to get ahead of himself.

Lassiter, who caught the fancy of new Gilas coach Tab Baldwin during the Governors' Cup with his superb shooting and improved defense, is still on cloud nine after winning their second championship in the past three conferences. The 6-foot-3 Fil-Am gunner played a big role in the San Miguel Beermen's championship run as complimented the inside dominance of Gilas shoo-in and reigning two-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo.

The Cal State Fullerton alum, who is a big Stephen Curry fan, has been shooting hundreds of triples at practice.

"Steph Curry has been one of my idols. I'm a big fan watching him growing up. I've been shooting my whole life," Lassiter said. "I just have to continue playing and make sure I have full confidence in myself to make the shots, timely shots."

It paid off as Lassiter made 65 of his 135 attempts from the outside for a remarkable 48 percent clip. He was at his best in the semifinals when the Beermen drubbed the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in four games. In that series, he went 20 of 31 including a personal-best 10 three-pointers in Game Two.

Baldwin said in a previous interview with Philstar.com that "There's no better shooter in the country right now than Marcio."

One of the members of the original Gilas team, Lassiter was left out in the second iteration as the San Miguel Corporation imposed its one-player per team policy. Former Gilas coach Chot Reyes opted for two-time MVP June Mar Fajardo at that time.

But this time, he might be included in the lineup depending on the crucial meeting between Baldwin and SMC top honcho Ramon S. Ang.

But Lassiter is in a wait-and-see mode and just want to relax and spend quality time with his family, something that he did not enjoy when they won the Philippine Cup title.

"It's an honor [if I ever get invited]. There's a reason why I'm here [successful] because I focus on the present. I don't want to get ahead of myself," Lassiter told Philstar.com after the Beermen won the Govenors' Cup title.

The PBA and SBP is set to announce the next Gilas pool sometime next week.

"I hope that when it does come, I can make a good decision," Lassiter said.
