Lions devour Pirates, stay unbeaten in Filoil

MANILA, Philippines -- The San Beda Red Lions bowled over NCAA-rival Lyceum of the Philippines University, 75-56, to stay unbeaten in three matches in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Saturday at the San Juan Arena.

Senior Art Dela Cruz scored 10 points for the Red Lions to give the Mendiola-based squad a 25-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates' trio of Joseph Gabayni, Wilson Baltazar, and Guy Mbida tried to keep the game close during the second quarter. However, the Red Lions were able to break the game wide open in the third quarter as they only allowed the Pirates to score seven points. The game ended with SBC winning 75-56.

In another blowout seniors match, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws made short work of the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 70-57, to go to 2-1.

From a slim 11-8 lead, the Tamaraws’ lead ballooned to a thirteen-point cushion, 23-10, after a pair of free throws from Mark Belo with 4.4 ticks left in the first period. USJR closed out the quarter with a lay-up to make it 23-12, but it wasn’t enough to blunt the momentum of FEU that continued to pile on the points behind Achie Inigo, Raymar Jose, and Russel Escoto who closed the first half in their favor, 37-23.

The Jaguars valiantly tried to mount a last ditch rally but without ailing African center Quintin Nzuzi who was still nursing a fever, the Cebuanos did not have the height to match FEU inside the lane. The Tamaraws ruled the boards, 52-41, with 16 coming from the offensive board that they translated into 15 second chance points.

Despite the blowout win, FEU Head Coach Nash Racela still reiterates that the team has a lot to learn on playing within the system. “We weren’t looking at the score; we are emphasizing to them about playing the right way,” said Racela.
