Roach upbeat on Mayweather-Pacquiao trilogy

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Finalizing a first fight is already a tall order, yet trainer Freddie Roach already sees a trilogy happening between his ward Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In an interview with HBO’s “The Fight Game,” Roach expressed his preference for Pacquiao and Mayweather to face off not once, not twice, but thrice.

“Doing a multi-fight contract, I thought that was the best idea in the world. I would love to see these guys fight more than once,” the multi-awarded trainer said.

Like Pacquiao, Roach badly wants Mayweather next for the Filipino icon, and things recently looked bright following the undefeated American’s challenge to Pacquiao to fight him on May 2 next year.

Top Rank chief is reportedly working behind the scenes with Showtime to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao super fight happen, while the rest of the world is again on a waiting game.

It is expected to be the biggest in richest boxing bout in history, one that could give birth to a bitter rivalry.

Roach, for his part, is all for it.

“If they split the first two, we could have a third. There could be a rubbermatch,” the bespectacled cornerman said.

“We could have three big fights. It's been done before, it could be done again,” Roach added.
