Sanchez heroics lift Bombers over Altas

4 p.m. – Emilio Aguinaldo vs Lyceum (Srs/Jrs)
MANILA, Philippines - Dave Sanchez hit a putback with 2.3 seconds left as Jose Rizal U came from behind to shock erstwhile unbeaten Perpetual Help, 62-61, and get back on track in the 90th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Sanchez came out of nowhere to snare the muffed three-pointer by Philip Paniamogan and heaved a winner of a floater to lift the Heavy Bombers to the victory, their third against as many defeats.
“I was just lucky to be at the right place,” said Sanchez.
In the ensuing play, Perpetual Help went to Juneric Baloria, who threw a desperation trey from near the centerline that appeared on target but hit the right side of the rim as time expired.
Jiovani Jalalon put on a double-double job of 21 points and 13 assists as he powered Arellano U to a 96-86 romp over San Sebastian and into solo second behind four-peat champion San Beda.
Jalalon also came through with a tournament-best seven steals as the Chiefs rolled to their fourth win in five outings while dropping the Stags to joint fourth with the idle Lyceum Pirates at 3-2.
Despite the win, which came after their sorry 80-84 overtime loss to Lyceum last Friday, Jose Rizal coach Vergel Meneses rued his wards’ poor execution at endgame.
“We made a mistake, defensive lapses down the stretch,” said Meneses.
After playing catch-up majority of the way, the Bombers kept it close down the stretch with Paniamogan draining a couple of triples, the first tying the count at 55 and the other giving the Kalentong-based squad a 60-55 cushion with about two minutes to go in the contest.
But Perpetual Help held Jose Rizal U scoreless and after Harold Arboleda hit a foul shot, Joel Jolangcob buried a trey and Earl Scottie Thompson completed a fastbeak play as Perpetual Help regained the lead at 61-60, with 11.3 seconds left.
But Sanchez stepped up to deliver the goods for Jose Rizal, which dealt Perpetual its first loss after sweeping its first three matches.
