Floyd: Pacquiao fight holds no weight anymore

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Before he fought Robert Guerrero and remained unbeatable inside the ring, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had Manny Pacquiao at the back of his mind.

No, he wasn’t thinking of fighting the fallen Filipino superstar.

“The fight really holds no weight anymore,” Mayweather told USA Today.

“If any chance that I would ever fight Manny Pacquiao... he just lost two in a row,” Mayweather added.

The Guerrero fight was his first since he had a hard time beating Miguel Cotto in May last year. But Mayweather showed no rust. Instead, he looked faster and sharper, especially on defense, to stretch his record to 44-0.

Guerrero couldn’t get to Mayweather except in the opening rounds. He absorbed 60 percent of Mayweather’s power punches and was bleeding at the end of the one-sided contest.

Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million for his latest picnic and stands to earn more from the other revenues. Guerrero smiled as he left the ring with $3 million and a little more to come.

Mayweather said Pacquiao just went the opposite way by losing his last two fights in 2012 – a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley and a harrowing knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather is 36 while Pacquiao is turning 35. They should have fought each other a couple of years back even if some people are still hoping that they would.

The flamboyant American said it’s not going to happen even if he has decided to continue fighting. He just inked a six-fight contract with Showtime while Pacquiao is on the other end of the cable with HBO.

Mayweather wants to be back in the ring September, throwing off plans by Top Rank to have Marquez vs Bradley on the same month, and Pacquiao vs somebody in October.

Marquez and Bradley may be moved to October, and Bob Arum said Pacquiao will return to the ring on Nov. 24 in Macau either against Mike Alvarado or Brandon Rios or whoever asks for less.

Mayweather said he’s not to blame that the Pacquiao fight didn’t happen when it was supposed to happen, when all the money was on the table.

He demanded a random blood and urine testing, and after Pacquiao finally agreed, there was an even bigger problem on how they would share the purse.

Mayweather offered Pacquiao $40 million with nothing for the Filipino from the pay-per-view sales. Pacquiao refused.

“A lot of people want to know what happened to the Pacquiao fight. All I’m saying is Floyd Mayweather wants to be in an even playing field. (Do) random blood and urine tested and we can make it happen,” he told USA Today.

“Once that couldn’t happen, he went his way and I went my way,” Mayweather said.

Pacquiao, so busy with politics, said he doesn’t need Mayweather because there are other fights out there.

He just doesn’t care.
