Is Manny’s hunger gone?

Pacquiao interviewed by Julio Cesar Chavez for Mexican TV. JOAQUIN HENSON

LAS VEGAS – Former two-time world boxing champion Gerry Peñalosa couldn’t be sure if he would advise his good friend Manny Pacquiao to retire after losing to Juan Manuel Marquez by knockout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena here Saturday night.

“It’s up to Manny,” said Peñalosa in Pacquiao’s glum dressing room. “It’s his decision. Only he knows if he’s still hungry to fight. He can come back if he wants. Other fighters have won championships coming back from a knockout loss. So he can do it, too.”

Peñalosa retired at the age of 39 two years ago. He was 36 when in a startling upset, the southpaw from San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, knocked out Mexico’s Jhonny Gonzalez with a single body shot to capture the WBO bantamweight crown in Sacramento in 2007. Gonzalez recovered from the loss to capture the IBO featherweight title three years later and the WBC version the next year. The difference is Gonzalez was 26 when he lost to Peñalosa and Pacquiao is now a week shy of turning 34.

“I think Manny should be more focused in boxing if he wants to continue,” said Peñalosa. “Right now, he’s too involved in religion which is good. But I’m not sure if it’s taking too much attention from his boxing.”

On the morning of his fight, Pacquiao chose to attend a Bible service with pastor Rice Brooks of Every Nation Churches in his 60th floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and failed to show up for Fr Marlon Beof’s blessing in a Catholic Holy Mass on the feast of the Immaculate Concepcion, a holiday of obligation. Fr. Beof announced before the Mass that Pacquiao would receive his blessing with the other Filipino fighters in the card after Holy Communion at the South Pacific conference hall at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

Fr. Beof said he purposely scheduled the Holy Mass at 8 a.m. so Pacquiao could come for the blessing and still attend the Bible service at 9 a.m. The Mass started at 8:20 a.m. and Pacquiao never showed up. Election lawyer Romy Macalintal delivered the first reading and Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia, the second. Peñalosa said it was sad that Pacquiao lost on the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On the way to the ring for the Marquez fight, Pacquiao was accompanied by Fr. Beof and Leonardia. Macalintal, who advises Pacquiao on political affairs, said he was disappointed that the fighter failed to show up for the blessing as promised.

“The sign of the cross was always part of Manny’s fight since he started his boxing career for so many years,” said Macalintal. “Making the sign of the cross was part of his timing and style, especially when he felt he was in trouble. Without it, he was a confused man in the ring as if wanting to make the sign of the cross but could not because of his new religion. Thus, his timing was off-tangent and he was an easy target for Marquez who hung on to his rosary as a devoted Catholic which was what Pacquiao was before the fourth Marquez fight. In Round 6, I was praying ‘Where are you, Mama Mary?’ then a few seconds before the round ended, that knockout punch from Marquez answered my question.”

Macalintal said in the first reading, the Lord reached out to Adam and Eve and asked ‘Where are you?’ “It was the first case of due process because God asked Adam and Eve to explain why they ate the apple and succumbed to temptation,” said Macalintal, a lector of the Last Supper of Our Lord parish in Las Piñas for 28 years.

Fr. Beof said it was painful to see Pacquiao lose to Marquez. Since Fr. Beof was requested by Pacquiao to celebrate Holy Mass on the morning of every fight since 2003, the ring icon has attended 17 straight without a single absence – until last Saturday.

There is talk that Pacquiao plans to establish his own ministry called “Word For All.” As a born-again Christian, Pacquiao no longer believes in saying the rosary or making the sign of the cross. Previously, Pacquiao used to observe a nine-day rosary novena before a fight and wore a rosary around his neck entering and leaving the ring.

Excuse me po.. wala na man po yatang sinasabi ang Panginoon sa Bible na apple ang kinain nila Adan at Eba. Genesis :2:17: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. HINDI PO APPLE.

its been a hard and bad bad day for pacman. u still have my prayers and support. in my opinion being with freddie roach for a such a long time i think its time for manny to change his coach. same tactics, same game plan will definitely hurt pacman. from the last four matches that freddie has been in the corner, he lost it all. 1st from amir khan., second to manny lost to bradley, 3rd amir khan again knock out in the 5th round and now mannyu again knock out in the 6th. i think it would be better if he ditch roach now. thats just my opinion.

Yes, Manny should replace Roach if he wants to continue. Pick someone who is Oriental and knows Karate. Someone who can turn his punch to breaking hollow blocks because they should've figured this out already that Marquez always get back and is able to recoupe so they need a stronger punch to put his lights out. A skull breaker. This is what they did to him and this is their ambition. I watch 24/7 and JM has dumbells on both arms and what seems to be a bowling ball. His punches is stronger. Unless Manny got soft and gentle because he thinks this is bad against his affinity with the Father or the divine. All I can say is that Manny is not the type to just leave Roach and appear to be an ingrato. They both have a good run but he can add new enhancements to training by upgrading the staff with a Karate coach.

ALL I CAN SAY TO U MANNY IS " GOD IS JEALOUS"... There's a saying, You can't serve two Masters @ the same time. and this time Juan Manuel Marquez's Prayers are powerful than yours!....think about those days when you are being blessed by the Lord... unbelievable power & strength on top of the ring, Praying in the corner of the ring helps a lot before you fight then, but now with your new faith you're not doing it anymore... I'm sure you yourself will feel the difference...and answer the question " WHY"

Manny its time for you to repent and ask forgiveness from God, you have neglected him by choosing another religion, you are not wearing the "ROSARY" anymore & signing of the cross is gone...Your faith in your new religion will be tested... Sabagay sobra sobra na ang binigay ng Diyos syo at iyong pamilya, siguro sabi nya Manny tama na kuhanin ko na ang power mo sa boxing, its time to retire... A sorry loss with a devastating K.O. sabi nga nila it will never be the same again.....

Karma na yan. O Gaba na na sa Cebuano pa

Are you all serious? Do you even understand what you're all talking about? Christians and Catholics have the same one and only God. Catholic is more of the routine structure style of praising God while being a Christian is to establish a deeper relationship with God not by means of repetitive recital of the same prayer over and over but by knowing God more based on His word. Manny is not worshiping a different God. He's trying to build a deeper relationship with Him. Manny winning or losing this fight has nothing to do with his new way of praising God. His boxing career is just part of his joirney. We cheered for him when he turned away from his vices and bad habbits. Something good is happening in him through Gods guidance and that is all that matters. Regardless of his boxing career outcome, he's now trying to live a life that is pleasing to God. Religion has nothing to do with a boxer winning or losing a match. What if a non believer wins a fight, does it imply anything? Boxing is just an avenue for Manny to share his gift and talents. Him living a life that pleases God and knowing God is what matters.

in the 3rd round, that's the same punch combination that Marquez did in their previous fights, left lead-followed by right..manny leaned backward as he always did and thus easily 'pushed with a punch'..Marquez also got the better position, stepping into Manny's right side.. look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYgtmcTWDPc 1:46.. Marquez lead left, Manny both hands up then drops right going for a counter but Marquez's right got it.. TRY TO COMPARE IT WITH THE FIRST KNOCKDOWN.. AND the same case in the knockout..Manny used his right which is again favorable for Marquez positionwise.. Manny is inside and Marquez outside, wherein Marquez could easily fire his right.. one of the commentators said something like "they've trained to move counterclockwise to Marquez's left, but Manny is doing the opposite" ... If Manny just sticked to the gameplan, he would have easily fired his left, made Marquez follow him instead, and Marquez less effective with the right... Marquez and Beristain surely did their assignment..in 24/7, Marquez did a lot of practice with that looping right.. I still want to watch a fifth fight though...I just hope Manny and his team would make a better preparation.. It won't hurt if Roach seeks help from other trainors...
