RP jins to vie in world tourney

- Joey Villar -
After the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Philippine taekwondo team shifts its focus on the tougher World Taekwondo Championships set Nov. 1-8 in Jeju Island, Korea.

Stephen Fernandez, one of the coaches who steered the Filipino jins to a three-gold, five-silver and five-bronze medal finish in the just-concluded SEAG, said the Philippine Taekwondo Association is currently holding eliminations to determine the composition of the team set to participate in the event.

"A SEA Games medal is not an assurance that you will get an automatic slot in the World Championships in Korea," said Fernandez in a victory party Tuesday night hosted by patron Petron.

"We’re still evaluating their performance and some of those who did not make the grade as far as the PTA and the coaching staff are concerned will have to undergo the eliminations round," he added.
