VIRAL: Surfer fights off shark attack on live TV

Three-time world surfing champion Mick Fanning made headlines on Sunday when a video of him surviving a shark attack was captured on camera and broadcast live over television. Youtube Screengrab

MANILA, Philippines - Three-time world surfing champion Mick Fanning made headlines on Sunday when a video of him surviving a shark attack was captured on camera and broadcast live over television. 

The attack occurred during the final of the Jeffreys Bay Open, a surfing competition in South Africa.

 "All of a sudden, I just had this instinct that something was behind me," Fanning told the World Surf League.

Watch Fanning escape the shark attack below:

Fanning was rescued by safety boats after fighting off the shark. According to the exclusive interview by World Surf League, Fanning managed to escape the attack by punching the shark. 

"I just saw the fin, I didn't see the teeth. I was waiting for the teeth to come at me as I was swimming ... I punched it in the back," he said.
