Solignum, Jardine: Protecting the environment through wood preservation

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Not many people realize that preserving the wood in Filipino homes has benefits that go beyond that of the homeowners themselves. The fact is, wood preservation is beneficial for the overall environment and ecology.

When people preserve wooden portions of their homes, there’s no longer a need to cut more trees to replace these when damaged. People would be saving thousands of trees if they ensure that the existing wood is preserved.  Considering the millions of Filipino homes that potentially will need wood in case they are damaged, thousands of trees would be saved if they ensure that the existing wood is preserved.   Studies show that proper preservation can keep wood intact and usable for at least 30 years, if not more, depending on the kind of wood and level of treatment.

Thirty years is more than enough for the next generation of trees to grow. So as a result of wood preservation, people can ensure that existing trees are kept alive and that a new generation of trees for future use, is in place when needed. This protects the natural environment and keeps the ecology in living balance. It’s a win-win situation for both homeowners and the natural environment.

“The impact of wood preservation on the environment and the ecology is something that Jardine Distribution Inc. (JDI) and our partner, Solignum, are very concerned about. Given the fast disappearing forest cover across the Philippines, the government has imposed a logging ban in many remaining forested areas. This is only right because if we continue cutting trees without control and regulation, we would be destroying nature,” said Peachy Tiu, JDI marketing manager.

“As homeowners and human beings, we are part of the whole vital ecology. Wood is a limited resource. The better we preserve it, the more we benefit not only for ourselves but also for the next generations,” Tiu added.

It was more than 50 years ago when Solignum first arrived in the Philippines — and since then, Solignum has been the tried, tested, and most trusted wood preservative in the country. Homeowners and homebuilders turn to Solignum to protect homes from the threat of termites, wood-boring insects, and fungi — all of which destroy homes slowly and silently.

Keeping in mind the need to preserve and protect the environment, Solignum and JDI recently launched another product innovation that makes Solignum more environment-friendly and more convenient to use as it has no irritating smell.

This innovation is called Solignum Exterior and Solignum Interior which to date are the most advanced wood preservatives in the market.  Solignum Exterior and Interior are both in Micro-emulsion formula.

Solignum’s Micro-emulsion technology makes the molecules microscopic. As a result, the active ingredient more easily and more deeply penetrates through the wood on which they are applied. This means even better protection against termites, woodborers, and fungi.

The innovative technology behind new Solignum Exterior and Solignum Interior also results in significantly lesser use of more toxic chemicals; instead it uses inert ingredients, which have the least amount of chemicals, making both products environment-friendly and with no irritating smell.

“They are made with ‘green’ technology to ensure minimal impact on the environment. They are designed to provide maximum wood preservation using the least amount of chemical. This makes their use safer in places like resorts, hotels, hospitals, clinics, spas, and establishments for medical tourism,” Tiu said.

With the new, high-tech formulation, Solignum Exterior and Solignum Interior are formulated to last long in providing protection against wood pests.

“The high-tech and innovative Solignum Exterior and Solignum Interior combine value for money with long-lasting effectiveness. Solignum is the most trusted wood preservative product in the Philippines for more than 50 years and it will remain so through the next generation. JDI and Solignum will continue their solid partnership in giving unmatched protection for Filipino homes,” Tiu said.

JDI represents a number of local and global companies that provide world-class crop protection and construction chemical products. They are focused on the safe use of these products, providing technical support, and with due consideration to environmental protection.
