Philippines hosts Asean mangrove confab

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is hosting a conference aimed at promoting sustainable mangrove management.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said the conference gathers mangrove practitioners, government officials, scientists and academicians who conduct research on mangroves in the Southeast Asian region.

“It aims to update member countries and other participants on the latest research and development on mangrove resource and to enhance public awareness on the current pressing issues, impacts and threats on mangrove habitats, particularly climate change,” Cimatu said.

The conference slated for Sept. 5 to 8 also seeks to promote the exchange of learning and good practices among Association of Southeast Asian Nations members, and to dialogue with development partners.

The second ASEAN Mangrove Congress is organized by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The first congress was held in the country in December 2012.
