Christmas truce on SLF arguments — Remollo

Juancho R. Gallarde - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said that, during the Christmas season, there must be a ceasefire in verbal tussles on air over the proposed purchase of a lot intended for the sanitary land-fill (SLF) in the city.

Remollo issued the statement on Thursday when he switched on the lights of the city’s giant Christmas tree at the Quezon Park, attended by other city officials.

“Christmas is a time for family and friends to celebrate Christmas, and its annoying for them to hear heated arguments on air,” said the mayor.

On the proposed location of the SLF, Remollo said he is hoping that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will approve it because he could not bear to see his constituents suffer the effects of the present open dumpsite.

Remollo said he is aware of the objections but he asked them to have an open mind because he could not let go of the SLF project just to avoid controversy. “We have to do what is good for our people and we’re not afraid of losing votes,” he said, adding that everybody has to sacrifice for the will of the majority and the city’s development.
