Mayor Codilla thanks donors for Yolanda victims

Edgar Allan Vilbar - The Freeman

ORMOC CITY , Philippines   â€” Mayor Edward Codilla of this city thanked all persons, entities, government agencies, non-government organizations, local government units, private sectors, United Nations, religious sectors, media and the rest of the world for their unselfish acts in helping the city residents who were victims of typhoon Yolanda.

Codilla, in a talk with The Freeman, said, "Thank you may not be enough. Nevertheless, the people of Ormoc say it with prayers and honor," he said. "We thank all those who helped us, be it in monetary, materials, services, mental and physical, regardless of where, how and when they did it. What is important is that you came and help us."

The city received a total of P23,466,983, including US$750 (or P33,337.50 in Jan.3 conversion rate), in monetary donations covering the month of November - December, last year.

Tzu Chi Foundation topped the list of donors, with its one-time donation of P17 million given to government employees, while Felix Mallen, a private individual, donated P645.50 from his change from a real property tax payment.

Codilla said the official list of donors and their corresponding donations, as recorded by the city's donation desk team, only reflected the registered donors. "Our team issued official receipts to those who coordinated with the local government," he said.

The mayor also cited an instance where a donor, Tzu Chi Foundation, gave a lot more than what was listed by the city government because the additional amount was given to some barangays and thus was not reflected in the city's official list. "This goes to the others who opted for similar approaches," he said.  (FREEMAN)
