Our favorite Filipino expressions in emoticons

Philstar.com

Manila, Philippines — The Filipino language is best known for the unique words that articulate seemingly complex feelings. Feeling "kilig" when we see our crushes, uttering the word “sayang” when we miss out on something, or internalizing "tampo" whenever our special someone gives us the cold shoulder, are just some of the truly Filipino words we use to express emotions.

On Facebook, stickers are one of the fun ways we creatively express these feelings online. With the incredibly long list of stickers (and emoticons) available on Facebook, it may be hard to find the right one to capture what you want to communicate. Check out a quick roundup of Facebook stickers that let you express the feelings and expressions we call our own.

'Kilig'

Perhaps one of the most popular Filipino emotions, kilig consumes us when we romantically connect with a person or to a circumstance. This can be manifested by a lot of things: the excitement you feel when your crush says that “Hi!” or even that feeling of giddiness when a person we like does something nice for us. Here a couple of suggested stickers you may want to use to tell your friends that you feel kilig about something.

Meep sees love: A classic “in-love” sticker never fails. It is direct to the point and one can really sense that the sender is just beaming with kilig.

Opi likes kisses: In case you have not downloaded the Opi sticker set, now’s your chance! This delightful and cute bear filled with kiss marks sends the message that you are consumed with the right amount of "kilig" and can still hold your composure.

Mim is in love: This moving sticker embodies that level of kilig you feel when you think about possibilities with a person you like or a situation that’s just too romantic to ignore. Imagine holding hands with that person you’ve always liked, or being involved in that romantic scene you just saw? Then this is the perfect sticker to use.

'Sayang'

"Sayang" is a feeling we are all too familiar with. Whether it’s missing our chances to take selfies with our idols when they were just in the same building as you, or not achieving your target by an incredibly slim margin—"sayang" is the word Filipinos use to describe missed opportunities. Are you experiencing this gut-wrenching feeling? Here are a few sticker suggestions to express that feeling of disappointment, or that lingering “what if?” in your mind.

Napoli Wonders: Don’t let this three-flavored ice cream sticker fool you, Napoli also feels disappointment. His expression pretty much sums up what we might look like the instance we realized that a missed opportunity merits a “what if?” moment.

Confused Bun: This happy-go-lucky rabbit usually has goofy and cheesy expressions, but when he feels dazed and confused, he certainly has a way of showing it. When it seems like you did everything but you still a missed an opportunity, this may be a good sticker to use.

Pusheen lies down: The fat cat that everyone loves is usually adventurous, but when circumstances do not seem to go his way, Pusheen lies down and reflects. Use this when you want to express that you are deeply contemplating on missed opportunities.

'Tampo'

"Tampo" stems from a feeling of being taken for granted. It is usually manifested by physical actions such as a defensive stance, refusing affections such as a simple hug or kiss from someone dear to us. Below are specific stickers you may want to consider to express this complicated emotion.

Mim is not happy: This sticker may be the closest to how a "tampo" fit looks like. Just check our local movies, and you’ll see how this stance has become so typical even in our day-to-day communication.

An ignoring Tuzki: A seemingly emotionless rabbit because of his permanently squinted eyes uses movement to express emotions. Tuzki’s stance definitely sends the message that you’ve been ignored somehow, and you want that per-son to know how you feel.

The fish means business: Like Mim, this Business Fish also has the classic tampo stance. But the added question mark adds a “what now?” element to the tampo you are feeling. This may come in handy when you want to urge that per-son to do something about the situation.

"Kilig, sayang," and "tampo" are just some of the many expressions we use to communicate how we feel. The examples above are just samples of engaging, unique, and colorful stickers found on Facebook.
