Reds storm tourist spot in Davao

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY , Philippines  — Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas yesterday attacked one of the major tourist destinations in Cateel, Davao Oriental.

No tourist was hurt in the incident that occurred at around 4 a.m., according to Capt. Rhyan Batchar, chief information officer of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division.

Reports said the tourists were arriving at the parking area of the Aliwagwag Falls when they heard gunshots.

Batchar said a team from the Army’s 67th Infantry Battalion (IB), who has been securing the area, managed to repulse the rebels who harassed the employees of the Aliwagwag Falls.

A member of the 67th IB, whose name is being withheld until after his family is notified, was wounded in the one-hour firefight.

“The place is secured right now. Pursuit operation is ongoing against the fleeing rebels,” Batchar said.
