52 quakes recorded at Bulusan
MANILA, Philippines – After four phreatic or steam-driven eruptions last week, 52 quakes were recorded around Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The agency said steaming activity was not observed due to thick clouds covering the summit.
Phivolcs said the volcano remains under alert level 1 as there could be more phreatic or steam-driven eruptions.
The eruptions last week blanketed several villages.
Renato Solidum, Phivolcs director, said there is no imminent threat of a major eruption despite the steam-driven eruptions.
“The alert level is maintained as we see possible phreatic eruptions, but we have not seen significant signs yet of magma rising to the surface,” Solidum said.
Phivolcs reiterated its warning to the public not to enter the four-kilometer permanent danger zone. Pilots should not fly close to the summit, it added.
Bulusan’s last magmatic eruption occurred more than 40 years ago.
