‘Erring’ Lady Tams make up, nip B’dogs
MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern banked on the solid performances of redemption-seeking Toni Rose Basas and veteran Bernadeth Pons to nip National U, 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20, and gain a share of fourth spot in the UAAP LXXIX women’s volleyball tourney yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Basas, who was benched in their previous victory over University of the East due to disciplinary and tactical reasons, punched in 17 attack points, two service aces and one block point, while Pons added 18 points to lead the Lady Tams to their second straight win and 3-2 overall.
Basas fired back-to-back aces following three straight hits by Pons to put FEU at match point from a 19-19 standoff. After NU saved two match points, Kyle Negrito sealed it with a drop shot as FEU sent NU reeling to its second consecutive setback and 3-2 overall and drew level with its victim at No. 4.
“This is the kind of game I’m looking for. They’re showing it on practices and I’m very happy they’re able to translate it into their performance,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos. “And Basas also came out (to play her A-game) today. Her benching against UE served two purposes – as disciplinary action and as way to hide her from scouting. Hopefully she’ll be consistent from here.”
Jaja Santiago led NU with 20.
