Province seeks Malacañang aid for Mandaue fire victims

SHOWBIZ UPDATE - Gregg M. Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Board has brought to Malacañang the plight of victims of simultaneous fires in Mandaue City during the New Year.

The PB passed Monday the resolution sponsored by Board Member Glenn Bercede requesting Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr. to extent financial assistance and other possible help to the displaced families in Barangays Guizo and Maguikay.

Evasco is also the concurrent head of the Housing and Urban Development  Coordinating Council (HUDCC), replacing Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo.

“In its continuing effort to truly extend relief to those who suffered unfortunately during the urgency of the situation, the Province of Cebu is formally requesting the HUDCC chief with assistance in order to further augment their basic needs during this predicament,” read Bercede’s resolution.

During New Year's Day, firefighters in Mandaue City were busy responding to four fire incidents that erupted almost at the same time, leaving at least 551 families homeless.

The fires hit the residential areas in Barangays Guizo and Maguikay, a warehouse in Barangay Looc, and a six-wheeler wing van in Barangay Bakilid.

Mandaue City Fire Marshall Senior Inspector Josephus Alburo earlier estimated the damage at P3 million. No fatality was reported. (FREEMAN)
