WATCH: Official launching of ASEAN 2017
MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday officially launched the Philippines’ hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2017.
The ceremony of the official launching of the country's chairmanship was held at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.
In his speech, Duterte said the Philippines will remain steadfast in upholding ideals and values committed to building a strong ASEAN community. He called on the Filipinos to take an active part in the community and asked fellow ASEAN members to provide better life to its people.
"We will place our people at the core; work for peace stability; pursue maritime security; and advance innovation-lead growth," he said.
He added that all ASEAN member countries are partners for change and assured them that they are one in this journey.
The ceremony was also attended by former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. —Rosette Adel
